Fire in Cairo

Well I see him running like he’s running from a fire in Cairo
Running so fast he’ll never see me standing by
I figure he is busy if he’s running from a fire in Cairo
And I’ll never stick around long enough that I can catch his eye

If he runs like this then I think that I am never gonna make it
But everybody tells me that’s the way it has to be
But anything I build I think that he is gonna break it
And if he breaks these things what is he gonna do with me?

Now he’s changing clothes like he’s found himself a job in Beirut
Dressing for the sun while I’m staring at the rain outside
He wants to ride the plane to get there for his job in Beirut
But he’ll never make the door if he can’t get his new tie tied

If he goes out there then I think that I am never gonna see him
But everybody tells me that he’ll send for me real soon
But anything I build is a prison that will never go to free him
And if he climbs the walls I’ll see him in the silver moon

Now he digs himself a hole because he’s hiding from the men from Paris
And he’s got me making soup so that he can keep his strength on top
He’s trying to learn the language so he can parley with the men from Paris
If he practices on me I think that he will never stop

If he starts hiding in the ground I think that I am going to walk away now
Being seen with him isn’t doing my name any good
I’m sure he’s got a heart of gold but I’m sure that if he knew how
He’d sell it for a racehorse and make do with a head of wood

Now I see him running like he’s running from a fire in Cairo
Breaking records for the mile with me a full mile behind
If he runs like this I swear I’ll start a fire in Cairo
Because he runs past everything I leave for him to find

If he runs like this then I think that I am never gonna make it
But everybody tells me that’s the way it’s got to be
But anything I build I fear that he is gonna break it
And if he breaks my heart what will he ever do with me?
