Xmas: It’s On!

The real race for Xmas chart domination starts here!

A fortnight on from the first, tentative appearances of the Mariah Carey/Pogues and Kirsty MacColl standards in the lower reaches of the top 100 singles, and the move has started, with both singles leaping into the top 20. Mariah Carey, as always, holds a slight lead, having climbed 35 places to no 17, with ‘A Fairytale of New York’ one place lower, but having made up more ground with a 49 place leap.

It’s much the same for the usual gang of suspects lower down, with Wham! the only other track in the top 40 so far, but Wizzard, Shakin’ Stevens, Chris Rea and Slade starting their bounce. There’s even a showing this year for ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’, but I am mightily relieved to find that this is the Brenda Lee original: I have seen the atriociously jokey Mel (Smith) and Kim (Wilde) video far too often already, even with the sound off.

There are two more weeks to the Official Xmas Number One and the annual fight to keep Simon Cowell stuffing it into his back pocket, but The Pogues and Kirsty have now made it to the Top 20 in ten consecutive years and the chance is there of a return to the top 10. Start downloading again, please. It would make my Xmas.
