Geniuses can still be stupid

An interview in the Guardian with Richard Dawkins, relating to the publication of a 40th Anniversary edition of his seminal book, The Selfish Gene, is tagged with the following, naive line: What is so special about things that never happened?

The answer is that fiction is how we are brought to care about things that never happened to people who never existed. Those incapable of seeing why that is special cannot be regarded as being wise.
